Time is So Short and I'm Sure There Must Be Something More

I'm actually not quite certain on the latter part of the title of this entry ("I'm sure there must be something more"), but on days like today, that's what I'm going with.  The title of this entry is from the song 42 by Coldplay.  The reason for the morbid title is the death of a girl I knew from high school.  She was only 19 years old and just one year ahead of me, although I met her in my 10th grade Spanish class (I'm not quite sure why she was in there, but I think she took a different language before she got to high school).  I do not know much about her death, and neither does the Washington Post, quite frankly, I didn't know too much about her life.  She was (obviously) an intelligent young woman, and I know that she enjoyed fashion and writing - often combining the two.  One of my best friends was pretty close with her in school, they both worked on the extracurricular writing scene.  She had a brother who graduated with me who is also quite intelligent, although I know even less about him.

My high school has dealt with so many deaths in recent years, it's frightening.  Although Laura was obviously out of school, she is the second member of her class to die.  The first member died before his senior year - a freak drowning upstate where he had been working.  The same year as his death, a girl from my class that I was friends with when I was younger went to a concert at a club in the city with her mother and her best friend from the grade below mine.  I do not know her family enough to be able to judge what happened in a fair manner, but the mother was intoxicated, entered onto a local highway going in the wrong direction, and her daughter's best friend was killed in the resulting head-on collision.  The SAME WEEKEND as the car accident, a girl from the same class as the girl who died in the car accident was stabbed to death in a convoluted and ridiculous incident.  Last January, another girl from my class that I was friendly with when I was younger was found dead in her room (I am not aware of what the reason for her death was, but it seemed like she may have hit a rough patch in her life and gotten involved with drugs).  This past September, while I was at F&M, a boy from the grade below me was found dead from a suspected heroin overdose.

Let's just tally this up here:

Deaths Since 2006/2007

Class of 2007: 2
Class of 2008: 1
Class of 2009: 3

Six kids since the 2006/2007 school year; six.  This is a harrowing figure for a normal, suburban high school from Infamous County, NY.  May this stay the figure for a long time and may they all rest in peace.

I'm sorry for such a depressing entry for your Friday evening.  I finished making the girlfriend (i.e. right hand) to Travis, my convertible puppy mitten, last night.  I believe we're going to call her "Taryn".  I'm not sure if Rachel-Marie meant this when she suggested "Travis" as a name for my mitten, but I thought of Travis Barker (Barker - woof, woof...get it?).  He was married to Shanna Moakler, so I thought of naming the right mitten "Shanna", but not only was I never fond of her, but they're no longer married.  The name "Taryn" comes from someone that I know of the same last name as Travis, who is the long-time girlfriend of a boy who is also named Travis.  Anyhow, my next entry will hopefully be about her and other knitty news whenever it is that I take some pictures of her and a few other FOs that I've completed in the past week or two.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

  2. Thank you, Leslie. I suppose it is reality. It's very depressing, though. Now our local newspaper is beginning to get all vulture-like over Laura's death. A reporter ambushed a Facebook group made in her honor asking for any of her NY friends to talk to her about Laura. I suppose that she means well and wants to do a nice tribute to her, but I don't think anyone really knows what to say. The group has about 1,000 members in it, though. Her death is particularly shocking because of her integrity and intelligence. I remember a few summers ago I sprained my wrist on our local bike path, and Laura happened to be walking with her dog. We didn't know each other all that well - like I said, we sat next to each other in Spanish class, but she insisted on sitting with me until my mother came. My prayers definitely go out to her and her family.

On a lighter note, haha, thanks for the scarf, Leslie! I am going to take pictures soon. I'll post some on here and then I'll send you the full-sized ones for you to choose from. PM me on Ravelry with your actual e-mail address.

    Take care,
    Kelly
